In 1895, the City of New Westminster did experience a Great Fire. This burnt down a majority of the city. A new Armoury was required to be built at the corner of Queens Avenue and Sixth Street. The old Armoury on the corner of McKenzie and Carnavon Streets was lost, as well as, the Royal Engineer magazine. The Crimean era field pieces also had problems. For the gun carriages and wheels had deteriorated with time and lack of financing for maintenance.
