The Chedworth Burial Ground That Never Was
GRO Ref D7751 3/4/1 Accession 7902 - transcribed by M. Tovey
Chedworth May 1872

The Burial Ground at the lower end of Chedworth being so very full we have purchased a piece of land formerly belonging to this Parish an exhausted Stone quarry and by altering the Road and Removing walls etc. Under the direction of the Surveyor of Roads (Mr. Stephens) and the waywarden (Mr. Brunsden) have considerably enlarged the said Burial place.
This burial ground is open to all persons belonging to this Village, and especially to those persons whose departed ones are inclosed therein without respect to sect or party.
This burial ground is not private property nor does the minister nor any other derive the least advantage from it whatever, as there are no charges, nor fees of any kind excepting three shillings which is paid to the Grave opener. The expenses incurred in the purchase of the land and in making the alterations exceed £30; and any assistance rendered towards defraying the above sum by any person will be gratefully acknowledged.
. Signed M. Cunningham

Probably related to the above is an entry in the Chedworth Vestry Record Book:

At a Vestry meeting held in the schoolhouse this 9th day of February 1872 to take into consideration the sale of a piece of waste land belonging to the Highway in the Parish of Chedworth lately in the occupation of Mr. Avery Newman. It was proposed By Mr. Townsend and seconded by Mr. John Collett that the same be sold, and that a preference be given to Rev M Cunningham in the purchase of the said land. The said resolution being carried unanimously.

Note by M. Tovey - There is no evidence that the old quarry just east of the former Congregational Chapel has been used as a graveyard, I do not know why.
