1.WILL OF JOHN CHARLES (d 1699) Proved at Worc., 9 Jan. 1699/1700."IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN the twentieth day of April in the seventh year of his Majesty's reign King William over England Anno Domini 1695 I John Charles of Blockley in the County of Worcester Yeoman being aged and full of days but of good an perfect mind and memory blessed be the Lord for it and calling to mind the uncertainty of this transitory life and that all life must yield to death when it please the Lord to call do make constitute ordain and declare this to be my last Will and Testament revoking and admitting by these presents all Will and Wills heretofore by me made either by word or writing and this to be taken for my last Will and Testament and none other And first being penitent and sorry for my sins past desiring of Gods forgiveness for the same I give my soul into the hands of Almighty God my Creator hoping to be saved in and through the merits of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and my body I commit to the earth from where it was taken to be buried in such decent manner as my Executor hereinafter named shall think meet and for the settling of my temporal estate such goods chattels and debts as it hath pleased God far above my defects to bestow on me I do order give and dispose the same in manner and form following And first I will that all those debts and duties that I am in right or conscience to any person or persons whatsoever be well and timely paid by my Executor hereafter named ITEM I give and bequeath unto my eldest son William Charles five shillings of good and lawful money of England to be paid to him within a year and a day next after my decease by my Executor hereafter named ITEM I give to my son Richard Charles my messuage cottage and tenement that I have in Blockley aforesaid now in the possession or occupation of Richard Coldicott being the sign of the six bells together with all the houses outhouses stables orchards gardens barksides and appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any way appurtaining and to his heirs forever PROVIDED always and my Will is that my said son Richard Charles shall pay to my Grandson John Charles the son of my aforesaid son William Charles the sum of fifty pounds of good and lawful money of England and to make good payment thereof within a year and a day next after my decease by my said son Richard his heirs Executors and Administrators ITEM I give and bequeath unto my son Samuel Charles my house that I live in Blockley aforesaid with all houses outhouses stables courtyards gardens barksides and appurtenances thereunto belonging or appurtaining during the remainder of years of the lease I hold it by with the Lease itself AND to all and every my other grandchildren I give to each of them two shillings six pence a piece to be paid to them within a year and day next after my decease by my Executor hereafter named ITEM I give and bequeath unto my daughter Ann the wife of William Pope the best pair of sheets that I have and one best dish of pewter ITEM I give and bequeath unto Hannah the wife of Nathaniel Mannder half a dozen of diaper napkins and my second best dish of pewter ITEM I give and bequeath unto my granddaughter Elizabeth Pope which now lives with me the bed and bedstead that she lyes upon and in with a pair of blankets and a pair of sheets and a coverlid thereunto belonging with the curtains to the same and also I give to her my said granddaughter the spinning wheel that she sometimes spins with ITEM I give and bequeath to my Grandson John Charles the son of Richard Charles my best brass pott And to my Grandson John Charles the son of Samuel Charles I give my next

WILL of SAMUEL CHARLES (1647-1724) Proved at P.C.C., 16 April 1725"IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN the sixteenth day of October in the tenth year of King George over Great Britain France and Ireland etc Anno Domini 1714 I Samuel Charles of Hanging Aston also Aston Magna in the County of Worcester Yeoman being in perfect mind and memory thanks be to Almighty God for the same and calling to mind the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say first and principally I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God my creator hoping and steadfastly believing through the merits death and passion of my Saviour and Redeemer Jesus Christ to
have full and free pardon of all my sins and my body I commit to the earth from where it was made to be decently buried at the discretion of my executor hereinafter named and as for those worldly goods and estate which God in his mercy hath here lent me I give and dispose thereof in manner following First I give devise and bequeath unto my loving son John Charles all those my messuages lands and tenements and premises with and every of their appurtenances situate lying and being in Aston Magna or Hanging Aston aforesaid in the said county of Worcester now in my own possession and also all my stock of cattle of what nature or kind soever and also my crop and crops of corn hay which shall be there upon at the time of my decease and all implements of husbandry whatsoever To have and to hold the said
messuages lands and premises from and immediately after my decease unto my said son John Charles and to his heirs and assigns forever. Item I also give and bequeath unto my said son John Charles all my stock of cattle corn grain and hay that is in and upon the farm called Dorn farm Ditchford Batsford and Lemington and every of them together with all my stock and moneys belonging or in any wise appertaining to the wool trade and wool to do and dispose of the same at his own will and pleasure. Item I give and bequeath unto my loving wife Anne Charles Ten Pounds per annum for the term of her life and I do hereby charge my said land and tenements with the two payments of the same by half yearly payments and the use of two rooms or more if shall think fit in my now dwelling house in Aston aforesaid viz the Lower Room called the parlour and the Chamber over the same the moiety or half part of the orchard and so much of the yard garden and barkside as she shall have occasion for her own use and further I give and bequeath unto my said loving wife the further sum of fifteen pounds of lawful money to be paid her by my executor within six months next after my decease and all my household goods and utensils of household stuff whatsoever to do and dispose of the same at her own will and pleasure and full and free liberty of ingress egress and regress way and free passage at all times for her and her friends to come into and from the same and also I give unto my said loving wife my horse that I commonly ride upon with a standing or place in my stable to keep the same in and my will and desire is that my said son John Charles shall at his own costs and charges find allow and bring home to my now dwelling house in Aston all the wood my said wife shall have occasion to burn and find her hay and straw for her horse yearly in case she shall think fit to keep one. Item I also give and bequeath unto my said loving wife Anne Charles all that my messuage or tenement lands and premises lying and being in the town and fields of Stretton on the Fosse in the County of Warwick now in the possession of Isaac White for the term of her natural life and from and after her decease I give devise and bequeath the said messuage lands and premises in Stretton aforesaid unto my son Richard Charles and to his heirs and assigns forever. Item I further give and bequeath unto my said loving wife Anne Charles all that my messuage tenement close lands and premises lying and being in the town and fields of Blockley in the said County of Worcester and all my right title interest property claim and demand whatsoever and tenant rights therein term and number of years now to come and unexpired to do and dispose of the same at her pleasure and to whom she shall think fit. Item I give all my stock and crop that I have at and upon a certain piece of ground called Black Downs unto my said son Richard Charles his executors Administrators and Assigns to do and dispose of them and every of them at his and their own wills subject nevertheless with the payment of thirty pounds to wit ten pounds Mary Harris and twenty pounds to John Charles. Item I give unto my son Samuel Charles two shillings and six pence and to my sons in law Thomas Southam, Richard Brandis, William Surh, Richard Hopkins and John Winslow who have had their portions already paid them the like sum of two shillings and six pence in remembrance of me. Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter the now wife of Harris the sum of one hundred pounds of lawful money of Great Britain to be paid her within twelve months after my decease. Item I also give unto my daughter Elizabeth Charles the sum of two hundred pounds of like lawful money to be paid her within twelve months next after my decease. Item I further give and bequeath unto my son William Charles all the principal money and interest that shall be due to me at my death upon a mortgage I have upon a half yard land lying in the common fields of Shipston belonging to one Sarah Parr spinster and also the further sum of one hundred pounds of like lawful money within twelve months next after my decease as aforesaid. I also give to my said son William Charles one young mare colt that is now and upon a common in Aston field. Item all the rest residue and remainder of my real and personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever not herein disposed of my debts legacies and funeral charges being first paid and discharged out of the same I give and bequeath unto my said son John Charles whom I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint sole executor of this my last will and testament revoking and making void all other wills and testament by me heretofore made and ordain and appoint this my last will and testament and lastly I give to my grandchildren five shillings apiece in remembrance of me In Witness whereof I the said Samuel Charles have hereunto set my hand and seal containing one sheet and half a sheet of paper and to both of them have set my hand and seal the day and year first above written. 3.WILL of JOHN CHARLES (1678-1750) Proved at P.C.C., 26 Oct. 1750"IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN I John Charles of Hanging Aston in the County of Gloucester Gentleman Do publish and declare this to be my last will and testament as followeth. First I give and devise all that my messuage or tenement wherein I now live and all that my messuage or tenement in the possession of John Smith situate in Hanging Aston aforesaid with all houses outhouses barns stables and appurtenances to the said messuages or tenements belonging and all that close or enclosed ground lying near or adjoining to the said dwelling house and also all those my enclosed grounds of arable meadow and pasture ground in Hanging Aston aforesaid commonly called or known by the several names of Aston Hill, Aston Meadow, Chapel Withys, Brook Furlong, Corn Hill, Aston bale, Three cornered close, Parcork Garden and also all those two closes or enclosed grounds called Parris Close and the over orchard and all those two grounds called Ham acre and Quality piece and my little ham called Sorrels Ham with all and singular the appurtenances to the said several closes or enclosed grounds belonging unto Thomas Bryan of Lemmington in the County of Gloucester Grazier and Francis Wheatcroft of Ditchford in the County of Worcester aforesaid Grazier their heirs and assigns to hold unto the said Thomas Bryan and Francis Wheatcroft their heirs and assigns forever Upon Trust that they shall and I do hereby authorise and empower them with full right and lawful authority to make sale and dispose of the said messuages or tenements several enclosed grounds and premises as soon as conveniently may be after my decease to raise money for payment of my just debts which shall be owing at the time of my decease. Also I give and bequeath unto the said Thomas Bryan and Francis Wheatcroft all my stock of cattle corn grain crop of corn and grain which shall be growing on my estates at the time of my decease and implements of husbandry whatsoever or wheresoever to be sold likewise for the payment of my debts. I give and devise all that my messuage or tenement outhouses and appurtenances and the three yard land and an half situate in Charingworth and Blackdowns in the parish of Ebberton which I hold by lease under Henry Dye Esq unto John Charles son of my brother Samuel Charles to hold unto the said John Charles from the twenty ninth day of September next ensuing after the time of my decease during all the remainder of the term and estate I have therein subject nevertheless to the payment of Two Shillings and six pence to Elizabeth Charles the sum of Five Pounds and five pence to Francis Charles the sum of Two Shillings and six pence to Ann Yarwood The sum of Ten Pounds to Richard Charles and the sum of five pounds to William Charles to be paid them severally and respectively within one year after he shall be in possession of the said premises. I give devise and bequeath all my new erected house in Hanging Aston aforesaid And also all that my messuage or tenement in the possession of Thomas Kettle with their and every of their appurtenances unto John Charles son of my brother Richard Charles his heirs and assigns forever and my mind and will is that all principal and interest which shall be due on the said messuages or tenements at the time of my decease shall be paid off and satisfied by the said Thomas Bryan and Francis Wheatcroft out of the moneys arising by sale of the estates herein before directed to be sold for the payment of debts. I Give and devise all those my two cottages or tenements with their appurtenances in Blockley in the County of Worcester aforesaid my close called Adam's Close and two keys of land in the common fields of Blockley which I hold by lease under the Right Reverend the Lord Bishop of Worcester unto Samuel Charles son of my brother Richard Charles his heirs and assigns subject nevertheless to the payment of fifty pounds to his brother William Charles. Item I give the said William Charles son of my brother Richard Charles the sum of fifty pounds to be paid to him within one year after my decease by my executors. I give Ann Charles daughter of my brother Richard Charles five shillings. I give Hannah Dunsby five shillings. I give Mary Charles daughter of my brother Richard Charles five shillings. I give my sister Rachael Surh the sum of five shillings. I give Mary Harris the sum of five shillings. I give Rachael Charles my bed in the parlour with the furniture belonging to it and one pot or kettle. I give Samuel Charles son of Richard Charles my bed and furniture belonging to it in the room over the kitchen and one pott or kettle. I give John Charles son of Samuel Charles my bed in the chamber over the parlour with the furniture belonging to it my large bell kettle pot the clock in the room where he lies and my great bible. I give my bed with the furniture belonging to it in the room over the hall the best chest in the same room one pot or kettle and a great bible to William Charles son of my brother Richard Charles. I give John Charles son of my brother Richard Charles the best bed with the furniture belonging to it in the room where my maid servants lie the chest of drawers in the same room and one pot or kettle. I give Francis Charles my bed and furniture belonging to it in the room where my servant men lie. I give Ann Charles daughter of Richard Charles the little bed with the furniture belonging to it in the room where the maid servants lie. Item I give all the rest of my household goods to the said Thomas Bryan and Francis Wheatcroft to be sold towards payment of my debts and legacies. I give and bequeath all the surplus and residue of my personal estate and effects whatsoever not hereby disposed of and which shall remain after my debts legacies and funeral expenses are paid and satisfied to be equally divided between John Charles son of Samuel Charles, Samuel Charles, John Charles and William Charles sons of my brother Richard Charles. And Lastly I do hereby constitute nominate and appoint the said Thomas Bryan and Francis Wheatcroft Executors of this my last will and testament To whom I give the sum of five pounds and fifteen shillings each for their trouble in the execution of the trusts by me in them reposed And I do hereby also will direct and appoint that the said Thomas Bryan and Francis Wheatcroft and the survivor of them and the heirs and assigns of such survivor shall and may from time to time retain take and keep all such reasonable costs charges and expenses whatsoever as they or either of them shall expend or be put unto in or about the sale of the said premises or otherwise in the execution of the Trusts hereby in them reposed and that neither of my said Executors shall be accountable for any more of the moneys arising by sale of the said premises or otherwise than shall actually come into their hands severally and respectively and that neither of them shall be chargeable or accountable for the receipts of the other of them In Witness whereof I have to this my last will and testament contained in two sheets of paper to the first thereof put my hand and to the second and last my hand and seal the eleventh day of February One Thousand seven hundred and forty nine.
