This project was a scaled up version of the original boxwood carving. Cast in a New York foundry in the spring of 1984. His associates on this project were Jim Hart, George Rammell and Jack Carson.

The Jade Canoe (1996), is the name given to this version of The Spirit of Haida Gwaii, the version in the Canadian Embassy, Washington, D.C. is The Black Canoe (1991).
The "Black Canoe" 6 m (20 ft) long, nearly 4 m (13 ft) high and weighs close to 5000 kg (11, 000 lb). Five years in the making, it was completed and installed in 1991.
